With all the empty retail premises in Gloucester why does someone not put cash tills in them that are linked to a central system and charge rent and rates as a percentage of the shop takings. This would fill up the empty shops and enable smaller retailers who don't make so much profit to go into business and fill up the empty shops.

Shame during the floods that the 4x4 response teams in the area were not caled upon to assist? They did a tirling job for the Red Cross - perhaps they need a call?

I am coming to visit family for the holidays, and I was trying to look on your website for churches in the area. Are there healthy churches in Gloucester to attend while I am visiting?

Webmaster:
There's lots of pages about local churches on the site. Clicking here help may help you find what you want.

I suggest your street cleaning team have a visit to spec savers. For the last 2 weeks there has been a bin left behind Northgate Hall full of rubish and behind mcdonalds there is litter everywhere. Nice to see gloucesters council tax payers getting value for money, NOT

My daughter will be taking part in this year's carnival. She is in the Royal Navy and will be one of the many who helped out at the Myth Power Station. My problem is where to park. . I would hate to miss out due to parking problems. Any ideas?

There's lots of places to park in the city. Look under 'P' for parking in our A-Z Guide for a complete list of car parks.

hello i was born in Gloucester, and what apeals to me are the old Victorian Warehouses, i remember as a kid i used to walk to the very top of one of these Warehouses when they were empty in the 1970s. I frequently used to walk to the very top and look down it is a fair old drop to the bottem. The Seaguls frequentley laid nests at the top of the Warehouses in Gloucester Docks.

I am a resident of Gloucester who has been forced from his home by the recent floods to live in a caravan on my property until my house is habitable. I note that citizens of the recent flooding in Yorkshire will be eligible for 25% council tax discount. I have been told by the Council that I am lucky that I will not be charged extra for the priveledge of having a caravan on my drive. Well Gloucester City Council, how about a bit of compassion at such a difficult time for us Gloucester residents who have lost most of our possessions in the worst floods in living memory.

Webmaster: The city council is obviously sympathetic to the many residents who have been affected by the flooding.  A caravan on the drive means that the property is still being occupied and is no different to other residents who have chosen to remain living on the upper floor of their homes.  The approach taken by the city council is the same as other districts in Gloucestershire.

I was the first Exchange Student at The Crypt School in Gloucester, in 1988-89.  As I heard of the floods, it brought back many memories. Gloucester seems to have changed, yet stayed the same.  Coming to your city was a big culture shock from my large Denver, CO.  However, I will never forget my time there.  I still think and speak of your city often. I was there for the school's 450 anniversary.  I was hosted by the Gloucester Severn Rotary Club and stayed with the Freshney family, the Gabb family, the Armiger family and the Till family.

I enjoyed a wonderful fews days' break recently near Gloucester and loved what I saw of the city. I am very saddened by images of the flooding but am impressed with the actions taken by the council. All best wishes to the affected people of Gloucester and I hope the waters subside soon and life can return to some semblence of order.

I think that 'Summer in the City' is an excellent idea and the Council should certainly maintain their efforts.  I notice on the online comments page for this someone is a little derogatory about what has happened so far - but things take time to take off. Its an excellent idea. Bring on the critics!

I was walking in kings square and thought what a great idea it would be to have the new LED lighting panels that they use at pop concerts and to make up large tv screens you can make this any size eg the back facia of debenhams. you could have concerts and displays of all types that would make the place modern and attractive which would draw more people in. this could then make this great space into a plaza with a few bars cafes

Is it me or are the Gate Streets looking a lot grubbier than they used to? The bit of Eastgate Street underneath Severn Sound in particular seems to be permanently coated in Pigeon crap.  Aren't these streets supposed to be steam cleaned early in the morning?

Webmaster:  We have just started a new streetcare contract with Accord plc which will see Gloucester become one of the cleanest cities in the country within the next four years. We currently operate a 'night owl' cleaning service from  Tuesday to Saturday  where we have a street cleaning crew in the city centre working through until the small hours of the morning to clear up after the pubs, clubs and take-aways have closed. The intention is to increase this to 7 days week. We also do steam cleaning as you mention. This time of year is always a problem with increased bird and gull activity. We will visit the area you mention to give it an extra clean.  If you notice something we have missed please contact us by either phone (01452 396396) or e-mail enviro@gloucester.gov.uk

Blaisdon Glos 11 April 2007 at 08:10:00 (GMT)

Having lived in Gloucester from 1972 to 2000, have seen many changes there. What an opportunity for Gloucester to build a state of the art energy from waste facility close to new housing development and pipe hot water to the new homes for heating. Such facilities are clean and have negligible environmental impact and can be built into the city plan. See example of Portsmouth where their facility is set within an industrial/business park close to offices, school and leisure facilities and housing.

This is one way to reduce fossil fuel use and reduce global warming.

Resident
Gloucester 05 April 2007 at 10:26:31 (GMT)

To the resident commenting underneath.  What exactly are you expecting? Do you want Council workers to knock on your door and carry all of your rubbish down for you?  Surely you have to take your waste to the communcal areas already?  What difference does it make sorting it into different bins?  Recycling is vitally important in helping to tackle climate change. Saving the world takes a little more effort - otherwise it would just be 'the way'. Oh and I think you'll find the majority of people in Gloucester do have doorstep recycling facilities - not simply a 'chosen few'!!

Resident
Gloucester 30 March 2007 at 15:36:25 (GMT)

I am sick of the council promoting the fact that they provide doorstep recycling facilities for all residents of the City  -  THEY DON'T.  They fail to day that if you live in an area dominated by flats, you will have to use communal recycling facilities.  This is ok for young people, but it is wrong to expect elderly people to carry all of their recycling to communal areas, and then lift their recycling into tall bins.  The City Council should provide ALL residents with doorstep recycling facilities, not just the chosen few!!

Gary Blakeley
Longford 27 March 2007 at 21:45:12 (GMT)

For Gloucester to be taken seriously it has to stop the city centre being indulged with cheap and cheerful shops , aggressive beggars and tacky market stalls. Just go to places like Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield to see how these cities have moved on. Gloucester seems in a depression which it cannot get out off whatever it is promised by the council. I would start with a full demolition of the bus staion which at the moment is a disgrace, knock down all the shops in Kings Square building trendy glass fronted shops making sure that these shops are of a quality that will represent the area.  The docks which is the greatest asset of the city needs to have new features like Hotel, a large fitness centres , bars and a cafe culture. Look at Bristol docks for a comparision to what it should be like. Finally the council should gets its act together over the bandstand. I cannot believe the time and expense it has taken to come to a decision on its future.

Webmaster: Gary, most of these issues are already being addressed.  Please see the following Links for more details:

Get fit, get healthy, eat healthy, take up an allotment plot and grow your own. Following several TV programmes on growing your own food, the City Council needs to promote their allotments more.

the new skatepark is a DISCRACE it cost less than the christmas lights and is in the worst area in the town. you expect us to stop skating the streets and go to that to get mugged, if you want us to move so much give us something good to skate where we wont get mugged or attacked.

Graham
Salzburg, Austria 10 March 2007 at 08:53:08 (GMT)

Great idea, the litter offenders page. Please include people who drop cigarette butts as well - I don't understand how normally environmentally conscious people don't consider this littering, despite the fact that the butts account for 40% of street litter and can take up to 12 years to degrade (According to Liverpool City Council's website).

Born in Gloucester Royal and live in Huntley. Currently at uni in Wales and missing all the fun of working in Tesco (Cattle Market) and going to Liquid on weekends!
Have always loved living in the County and hope to be back after Graduation (if I don't get in for a Master's). I hope to eventually return home and move into Gloucester itself, so I can live and work in the city and promote public transport by walking or bussing to work. I might have to apply for work with the Council, as I really love my home town and would love to help improve it and encourage more people to visit and/or live here.
Being away really makes you appreciate home! For now I'll have to be content with phonecalls and checking the Citizen and this site for news!
