Within the City Council, the Community Strategy Team has responsibility for the community strategy, neighbourhood strategy, neighbourhood regeneration projects, being accountable for externally-funded schemes, community cohesion, youth participation, consultation strategy, neighbourhood partnerships and neighbourhood management.
In line with national policies on neighbourhood renewal and modernising local government, Gloucester City Council and a range of key partners, including the Police, the Health service, the Regional Development Agency, business, and local voluntary and community organisations, formed a local strategic partnership (LSP) - the Gloucester Partnership - in 2001, and subsequently produced a Community Strategy: Our Gloucester - Our Future.
The vision of the Community Strategy is - over the next ten years to create a fair, just and thriving community where no one is seriously disadvantaged. The six ambitions focus on regenerating a vibrant and sustainable city; tackling unemployment and poverty; improving health; enhancing education, cultural and leisure opportunities; making Gloucester a safer, cleaner, and more pleasant place; and working jointly across agencies and communities. Each of these ambitions has targets for the first five years, 2003-2008.
In view of this, the Community Strategy Team was formed in spring 2002 in order to:
-
support the development and work of the Gloucester Partnership
-
make sure that the Community Strategy is actioned and implemented
-
work on other partnership strategies (such as those on Neighbourhoods and Community Cohesion) to support and implement the Community Strategy
-
develop, bid for, manage and be accountable for projects and schemes that deliver neighbourhood regeneration and renewal, in line with the aims of the Community Strategy and sustainable development priorities
-
encourage active participation by residents within City Council and Gloucester Partnership structures, particularly through developing neighbourhood partnerships and youth participation projects
-
lead on developing, co-ordinating and rationalising consultation methods, and on implementing the City Council's Consultation Strategy.
