Disability Living Allowance
  • Do you have a long term illness/disability?
  • Do you have difficulty looking after yourself?
  • Do you have problems walking?

Disability Living Allowance is for people aged under 65, It is paid to people who have an illness or disabilty and they have difficulty looking after their personal care needs or problems with walking.

Disability Living Allowance is tax free, and is paid by the Disability Benefits Unit.

Can you claim?

  • You have an illness or disability that gives you  difficulty to look after your personal care or difficulty walking outdoors.
  • Your diffuclty must have been present for the past three months and is likely to continue for the next six months or more.
  • A child can also apply if their care needs are in excess of that required for children of that age. After three years old, children can apply if they have difficulties walking outdoors.

How much can you claim?

This depends on the level of difficulty you are having with your personal care needs and or walking difficulties. Your savings will not effect the amount you receive and will not reduce any other benefits that you may be in receipt of.

If your answer is YES to any of these questions you may be entitled to Disabilty Living Allowance.

  • Do you have problems with personal care such as washing, bathing or getting dressed?
  • Do you have problems seeing or hearing and need help with communicating?
  • Do you ideally need someone around to keep an eye on you for any reason, such as falls, fits, giddy spells or because you have mental health problems?
  • If you are over 16, do you have problems cooking a main meal for yourself because of your health problems?
  • Do you have difficulty walking even very short distances because you feel pain or get tired easily?
  • If you can walk, do you ideally need someone with you to keep you safe or show you the way?
  • Does someone have to supervise your child because they have behaviour which could put themselves or others at risk?
