BAR The New Olympus Theatre, Barton Street

List grade: II - No. 10002

Ancient monument: No

Conservation area: Yes - No:10

Ownership: Private

Description:

A former cinema, now a theatre, built 1922-3.  The double-height auditorium has one balcony and retains exceptionally rich plasterwork to the walls, ceilings and balcony front.

There is rainwater ingress due to defective or missing rainwater goods. Flat roof coverings have reached the end of their serviceable life and are also allowing the penetration of water.

Status:

Investment is required for essential maintenance and repair work in order to avoid further deterioration to internal wall and ceiling finishes.

The property changed hands in 2008. The City Council has made some money available under its Interim Historic Areas Grant Scheme, to encourage the new owners to carry out the works required to enable the building to be removed from the register. The owners are looking into possible sources of match funding in order to make the most of the City Council's grant offer.
