C O L O U R S C A P E

by Gilly Mound

BACKGROUND

Gilly worked for several years as a fabric retailer and then as a freelance knitwear designer selling her designs in the UK, Europe and Australia. In the early 90s when the recession began to bite and business slowed down, she took the opportunity to fulfil a long-held ambition to study fashion and textiles at U.W.E Bristol. During this time she was commissioned by Mulberry to design a knitwear collection. In 1998 she began teaching textiles and fashion at Worcester College of technology. She still teaches occasionally but since 2006 she has devoted her time to her personal art practice. Although a great lover of textiles her work frequently reflects her interest in other media and methods, including acrylics and collage.

ART STATEMENT

“My pieces are painted in acrylic on canvas, sometimes with the addition of stitch or textile. My inspiration comes from many commonplace themes: houses, boats, birds, fish, the countryside and coast.... The pictures I make are about the shapes, colours and textures of those images. My aim is not to obtain realism in my work but to simplify or exaggerate the compositions, highlighting particular areas and hoping to capture the essence and beauty of a subject as it appears to me. I work from my studio in Worcestershire overlooking the beautiful Teme Valley where I live with my husband John, our big dog Basil and several happy chickens!”
