Historic Environment Team
Gloucester has a rich archaeological heritage with important remains from the Stone Age to the founding of the Roman and medieval city, through to the industrial heritage of the city’s docks and railways.
The Historic Environment Team (founded in 2004) is the successor to Gloucester Archaeology Unit (founded in 1973) following the reorganisation of the City Council’s museums, archaeology and heritage service. The team is responsible for maintaining the city’s Historic Environment Record (the database of the city’s heritage), for providing archaeological planning advice in the city , running community heritage projects, carrying out archaeological research and, in partnership with the Museum Service, of curating the city’s archaeological archive.
NEW PAGES COMING SOON: Following further reorganisation the Historic Environment Team is joining forces with the Conservation Team| to form a combined Heritage Service responsible for both the archaeological and built heritage of Gloucester.
