The City Museum

For the last few months Gloucester City Museum has been closed for a full make-over but after opening its doors in August with a brand new experience for all the family, the official launch will be held on Gloucester Day at 2.45pm when the historic Gloucester Day parade will stop outside the museum on Brunswick Road and the opening ribbon will be cut by a mystery celebrity.

The museums complete transformation has provided exciting new interactive displays, improved educational facilities, a new reception area, shop, cafe and complete redesign of the ground floor.

Highlights include dressing up as a Roman or even a Celt.  You can touch feel and smell Gloucester’s past in a Roman kitchen or medieval street.  Listen to the sounds of Gloucester gone by and have a go on a Roman building site.  Make discoveries in the investigation lab or make something to take away in the crafty corner.  Play some games in our toys and games zone, maybe get up close and personal with some surprising dinosaurs.  From giant ice age beasts to golden treasures, you will be amazed at what you find, so come along and see Gloucester’s heritage in a fresh new light!

To celebrate Gloucester Day and the City Museums launch, a fun packed day of living history will be put on behind the City Museum on the bowling green next to Constitution Walk.  From 10am to 5pm expect to see and interact with people from the Iron age, World War 2 and Roman times, chat to the Victorian Family or see what services the Medieval barber surgeon has to offer.  Old and new games for all the family will be available along with themed craft activities.  Local expert Kurt Adams will be on hand to identify objects you have found at home and both real and replica objects from throughout history will be available to investigate.

Sponsored by BBC Learning as part of this summers Dig 360 season, two raised archaeological dig will also be set up for all the family to have a go at digging up and identifying objects they have found. County archaeologist Anna Morris will be on hand to help out.  With the amazing interactive sculpture exhibition inside the museum, a themed menu in Café Nerva and a whole new museum to discover there will be something for everyone to enjoy so come along and celebrate Gloucester’s heritage
