Dinosaurs - Session

Gloucester City Museum

Key Ideas:

How are fossils created?

How do we know about dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures?

How can Maths be used in the real world?

Learn more about the creatures that walked and swam in and around Gloucester over 60 million years ago!

This exciting and active session combines role play, object handling, reasoning and Maths skills to explore dinosaurs and fossils. There will be opportunities to handle real fossils and decide what we can tell about the creatures they once were. We will compare a dinosaur footprint and leg with that of a human, look at how dinosaurs moved around and use some basic Maths to discover dinosaur heights and also if we could outrun them! We’ll discover if dinosaurs made good parents by looking at herd behaviour and also have a go at defending out own young dinosaurs against predators. All pupils will have lots of opportunities to walk and roar and think like a dinosaur - the big question is will any of them make it to become a fossil in our collection?

This engaging and very active session uses dinosaurs as a backdrop to practice key communication, Maths and reasoning skills. It particularly supports Mathematical Development, and wider knowledge and understanding of the World, as well as the key investigation and reasoning skills which form a backdrop to the work done particularly through the Science and History.
