Gloucester City Museum
Key Ideas:
How can we use our senses to explore and recognise the similarities and differences between materials?
What are the properties of some common materials and how does this make them suitable for different uses?
How can we group and categorise different materials together?
This session involves lots of opportunities for handling objects made from different materials and discussing their different properties. Pupils will describe and sort materials based on how they look and feel and during our feely bag challenge try to identify samples of different materials from touch alone. There will also be opportunities to compare samples of raw materials with finished products and explore why we might adapt or treat them to make them more fit for purpose. Ideas of natural and man made materials, along with issues such as recycling and biodegradability will also be touched upon.
For pupils that struggle with the ideas of science in the classroom, this visual hands-on session is ideal for raising confidence and promoting understanding in a relaxed environment.
