Gloucester City Museum
Key Aims:
What primary evidence do we have of the Romans in Gloucester?
What was life like in the homes of Roman Gloucester?
This session will take you back in time to explore life in the homes of Glevum, the world famous and important Roman colonia known today as Gloucester. You and your pupils will spend the session in Roman dress exploring local Roman homes.
Through handling genuine objects your pupils will build up an understanding of local Roman homes by exploring their roofs, floors, walls, windows and interior decoration. Pupils will also discover more about Roman life through the personal and household possessions of local Romans. There will be opportunities to discover what the Romans ate and how they prepared it, what pastimes they enjoyed, how they dressed and even how they cleaned their ears!
The vast majority of the objects used in this session are genuine and can be handled by pupils. Therefore as well as providing a fantastic exploration into the Romans this session is also ideal to enthuse your class about the power of the past by getting them to literally hold it in their hands.
To get the most out of your Roman themed visit to Gloucester City Museum why not also book our Roman Military session where you will explore life as a Roman soldier and the Roman city walls in the Eastgate Chamber.
