Roman Military Session

Gloucester City Museum

Key Aims:

What primary evidence of the Romans can we find in Gloucester today?

Why did the Romans come to Gloucester and how and why was the colonia of Glevum founded?

What was life like in the Roman Army?

Welcome to the famous Roman colonia of Glevum! You and your pupils will explore Gloucester from Roman street level to really experience life as a Roman soldier.

The session involves a visit to the nearby Eastgate Chamber, to see and walk amongst the original Roman walls and discover how the Roman fort was built. Your pupils will see the ingenuity of Roman engineering and discover how the Romans stopped the fort sinking; how they manoeuvred the huge stone wall blocks into position and what domestic comforts the fort enjoyed.

To be entitled to retire in the colonia of Glevum you and your pupils will have to complete twenty-five years as a Roman soldier to gain the status of a Roman citizen. So the session will also provide opportunities to handle and try on (replica) armour and weapons. Your pupils will also discover what kind of pay, training, living conditions and daily life the average soldier enjoyed (or should that be endured?)

To get the most out of your Roman themed visit to Gloucester City Museum why not also book our Roman Domestic session and learn more about life in the homes of the colonia. Or why not borrow our Eastgate model as a reminder of your trip back in the classroom.
