Toys and Games - Loan Box

Traditional Toys Loans box 1

What did children play with in the past?

How are our toys different to those in the past?

What makes a good toy?

How do some toys move?

This box contains a good variety of traditional toys from the past to allow pupils to explore and compare different toys in the classroom. The toys should stimulate discussion about what materials toys were made from, how they would have been made (homemade and factory mass production) and who would have played with them. They should also help pupils think about what attributes they like and value in a toy. As all the toys in the box can be handled and played with, all pupils should have ample opportunity to become really familiar with the toys in this box.

The Traditional Toys box serves as a brilliant introduction to the past for Key Stage 1 pupils, focusing on concepts, objects and ideas that they will have some familiarity with. It provides a fantastic opportunity for pupils to consider the similarities and differences between their lives and those of children in the past.

Older pupils will benefit from exploring the technical side of old toys, exploring why and how certain toys move and contemplating the style, material and design choices of some of the old toys.

All of the toys in this box can be handled and played with. Handling notes and information about all the toys are included in the box, along with ideas about the box can be used effectively in the classroom to support and inspire learning.
