Tudor Life - Session

Gloucester Folk Museum

Key Aims:

What were Tudor buildings like?

What was everyday life like for different sections of society in Tudor England?

This hands-on session allows pupils to explore everyday Tudor Life for different sections of society. We look at trade, domestic life, clothing, housing and compare different day-to-day lives through reproduction period objects and costumes. The Folk Museum itself was originally a Tudor merchants house and pupils will be able to see the original wall paintings in situ and  explore the original constructions marks, features and beams that are still clearly visible and integral to the building over 500 years after their construction. The Museum garden also contains herbs and plants that would have been regularly used in Tudor foods, medicines and daily life.

Tudor Trail in conjunction with Gloucester Cathedral

Why not combine your Tudor visit to the Folk Museum with a look at Tudor Monastic and Royal life at Gloucester Cathedral. At the Cathedral, pupils dress up as and become monks of St Peter’s Abbey. Our new Tudor monks attend a Chapter Meeting, sing in Latin in the Quire and try their hand at writing with quill pens, making a Tudor rose and illumination. They also discover all about Henry VIII's dissolution money making plan and what it will mean for St Peter’s Abbey and other monastries across the country.

This session is also offered as an "all day package" in conjunction with Gloucester Cathedral. This is a two part session designed to be in two parts of one hour each. The class may begin the day either in the Cathedral or the Folk Museum and have their lunch in that building before moving in the afternoon to the other venue. The distance from the Cathedral to the Folk Museum is just a five minute walk.
