Victorian Christmas - Session

Gloucester Folk Museum

Key Ideas:

How was Christmas celebrated in the past? How have Christmas traditions and rituals developed?

How did life differ for richer and poorer Victorian children even at special times of the year?

Join us as we celebrate Christmas in a most traditional Victorian way. Discover the origins of many of the Christmas traditions and practices that we now take for granted. Full Victorian costume will be provided for all pupils taking part and we usually have one or two pieces we can lend to the adults too to help them get into character too.

Pupils will discover more about the origins of the first Christmas cards and crackers, the significance of certain decorations and help dress our own Christmas tree. The traditions of Stir up Sunday, lighting the Christmas pud and other Christmas foods will also be explored. The differences between Christmases for those in poor and richer Victorian households will be explored, along with the Victorian etiquette of present giving. And as no Victorian Christmas would be complete without a parlour game or two, we will finish with some traditional games, where all truly well behaved Victorian children may receive a small gift.

Why not make it a Victorian day?
