World War 2 Evacuee - Session

Gloucester Folk Museum

Key Aims:

What was it like to be a child, parent or foster family of an evacuee during World War Two?

Effective speaking, listening, questioning and group discussion skills.

Welcome to Gloucester Folk Museum Evacuee billeting station! A member of the Women’s Voluntary Service will be on stand by ready to organise pupils off to their new foster homes and tell them more about life as an evacuee.

Pupils will consider why Evacuation was considered necessary and briefly how the mass evacuation plans were put together and how transport was arranged. There will be a chance to see what the government recommended you took with you to your foster new homes – will it be what you expected? The session will also look at other groups of people that were evacuated along with children and explore their experiences. The story of the boys that came to Gloucester through the Kindertransport scheme will also be explored.

We will also look at evacuation from the point of view of the parents asked to give up their children, and the new foster families asked to take in strangers. Pupils will be asked to put themselves in the position of the different sides involved in evacuation to decide what they would do in certain situations.

This session will encourage debate, empathy and discussion as the pupils put themselves in the positions of others and make some difficult wartime decisions. History will really come to life in this session.

To get the most out of your World War Two themed visit to Gloucester Folk Museum why not also book our On the Home Front’ – World War Two session, where you will look at objects and ideas to do with rationing, public campaigns, bombing, the blackout and new roles such as ARP Wardens and the land army amongst other things.
