Garden Waste Frequently Asked Questions

I don't have a garden waste service at my house at the moment; will these new changes affect me?

Yes.  If you have sufficient storage space at your property and there is unhindered access for the garden waste vehicle, you may be part of the new service.

Will I be able to purchase the compost?

We are currently working with the County council to allow compost to be purchased at the Household Recycling Centre|, Hempsted.

What if I don't want to participate?

Please keep your garden waste bin in case you change your mind.  If you still think you're not going to use your bin, we can arrange to remove it.  Please contact us on 01452 396396 after 4th April 2011.

Can I have a refund if I wish to stop the collection service during the year?

No.  There will be no part-year refunds.

Why do I have to pay for the service?

While your Council Tax bill includes a charge for the collection and disposal of domestic waste, the Council is not obliged to cover the cost of collecting garden waste.  Some Council's may have the resources to cover this cost, which is why some offer this service for free.  Unfortunately, at this time Gloucester City Council cannot offer this service to residents for free.  Following consultation with residents you told us you would rather pay a small fee to self finance the service, rather than for it to be withdrawn.

Since many residents already home compost, and are happy to take garden waste to the Houshold Recycling Centre| or do not have a garden, we're charging only those who want the service rather than everyone having to pay through Council Tax.

How will the crew know I have paid for the service?

When you sign up you will be sent a sticker for your Garden Waste bin, please write your house name or number, as instructed,  in the box provided on the sticker.

The crew will have details of all residents who have paid for the service and will look for a bin with a sticker at the address.  Residents who put out a bin without a sticker will not get the bin emptied.

I have received my sticker. Why does it say renewal September 2011 when I have paid for 18 months?

The date on the sticker shows when the service runs from, taking into account, your 6 months free (April to September).  The crew will know you have paid for the year from September 2011 until September 2012.  Following feedback from customers, once this stock of labels is used up, we will change the label for new customers to show renewal end date e.g., September 2012.

When I sign up for the Garden Waste Service, when will my bin be emptied?

When you sign up to the new service, your bin will be collected 2 weeks following payment.  This gives time to process your application.
