Gloucester City Council is committed to managing biodegradable materials in an environmentally acceptable way.
Rotting garden waste in landfill produces methane, a greenhouse gas that is considerably more harmful than CO2. By signing up to the garden waste collection scheme, you can help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and combat climate change.
Important changes to garden waste collection
Your garden waste collections are changing. From 4th April 2011 a subscription will be needed in order to receive the service. This will be £36 per bin per year or £18 per bin per year if you are receiving Housing or Council Tax Benefit.
A charge for collecting garden waste is being introduced following consultation with residents regarding the Council’s financial position. The Council needs to save £4m this financial year and residents were asked what their priorities were for achieving this.
The saving can be made up of reducing costs or finding new ways of funding services and feedback from residents indicated they would be prepared to pay a charge for the collection of garden waste rather than have the service withdrawn.
The collection of garden waste is a discretionary service and some residents choose not to use it as they prefer to home compost and many residents do not need the service as they do not have a garden. Therefore, it was decided that only residents who want to use the service should pay for it.
To maintain continuous collections, you will need to sign up.
