Why Compost?
Composting is an inexpensive, natural process that transforms your kitchen and garden waste into a valuable and nutrient rich food for your garden. It's easy to make and use.
Getting a good mix
Many first time composters will make the mistake of putting too many "greens" in their compost bin. To make a good quality compost you will want a good balance of "greens" and "browns" in your compost bin. "Greens" include grass cuttings, cut flowers, citrus peels and various plants while "browns" include egg shells, cardboard and straw. For a full list of "greens" and "browns" along with what is not compostable, click here|.
Where to place your compost bin
The best place for your compost bin in a reasonably sunny site on bare soil. If you have to put your compost bin on concrete, tarmac or patio slabs ensure there’s a layer of paper and twigs or existing compost on the bottom. Choose a place where you can easily add ingredients to the bin and get the compost out.
