Gloucester, a city of intense urban activity for nearly two thousand years, has a special legacy of nationally and internationally significant heritage from all historic periods. The city's heritage, along with Gloucester's diverse communities, marks what is uniquely special about Gloucester.
Gloucester has a rich archaeological heritage with important remains from the Stone Age to the founding of the Roman and medieval city, through to the industrial heritage of the city’s docks and railways.
The City Archaeologist is responsible for maintaining the city’s Historic Environment Record (the database of the city’s heritage), for providing archaeological planning advice in the city and initiating and supporting community heritage projects.
Community Heritage
The City Archaeologist supports community groups, individuals and visitors' engagement with Gloucester's heritage. Gloucester is a diverse city with many different communities and neighborhoods. The Council aims to support community engagement with heritage to stimulate a sense of ownership of, identification with and pride of the city amongst residents thereby enabling the City's heritage to be enjoyed and understood by all.
Planning advice
The City Archaeologist is the first point of contact for developers or planning agents involved in a development proposal that may have an impact on the city’s historic environment (archaeology).
