Financial help to improve your home
If your home is in need of repair or improvement or if you require adaptations to suit your particular needs, you may be able to get financial help with the cost of the necessary work. The funds available may limit availability.
Mandatory Disabled Facilities Grants
Disabled Facilities Grants (DFG) are considered to be of a high funding priority, they are mandatory for certain purposes.
They are primarily designed to enable disabled people to live independently and in safety in their own homes or with family. This can include providing stair lifts, additional toilets, bath/shower facilities, ground floor bedrooms, ramps, door widening, kitchen alterations etc. They are subject to a Test of Resources (means test), which is an assessment of how much you are able to pay towards the cost of the works and take into account the means of the disabled person for whose benefit the works are being carried out and their partner or spouse. In the case of disabled persons under 18 years of age, their parents means are taken into account.
Whilst the Private Sector Housing Team is primarily responsible for administering DFG's the Occupational Therapists at Social Services are consulted to assess the needs of the disabled person and play an active and ongoing part in advising on the priority of dealing with applications. Joint visits and continual liaison between the Private Sector Housing Officer and Social Services, ensures that good quality adaptations are provided reasonably quickly.
These grants are available to owner/occupiers and tenants who are disabled, or to landlords and owner/occupiers on behalf of a disabled occupant.
All applicants must be over 18 years of age at the time of making an application. In the case of disabled children (under 18), the parent or guardian is required to make the application.
The maximum amount of grant is £30,000 subject to a Test of Resources (a Test of Resources will not be required if the relevant works are for a disabled child) and this is separate to any other funding, which may have been granted.
