Apprenticeships at Gloucester City Council

Introduction

Gloucester City Council run Apprenticeships supported by the Skills Funding Agency. The scheme is aimed at young people aged between 16 - 18, and there is a potential for approximately 15 placements at any one time.

Who runs the scheme?

The overall responsibility for running the apprenticeship scheme is undertaken by the Council's Human Resources unit, but apprentices are spread across various Council Service Units.  Placements are available in a wide range of environments including:IT Services, Human Resources, Communications and Marketing, Neighbourhood Management, Business Improvement and many more.

How good are these schemes?OFSTED-oustanding

The apprenticeship scheme regularly achieves a high success rate of apprentices moving into jobs, with some being recruited internally by the City Council.

The city council was Ofsted inspected in 2008 and is extremely proud of achieving the best grade available: 1 "outstanding".

What's on offer?

The apprentices work towards their Key Skills, an NVQ Level 2 or 3, Technical Certificate and other qualifications. As the employer and training provider the Council invests in its apprentices and develops them throughout their placement.  Regular work reviews are held and relevant in-house training is given in Telephone Techniques, Information Technology, Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety etc.

Is there a job at the end of the apprenticeship?

Some apprentices gain enough experience and knowledge before the end of their apprenticeship programme to move into jobs. All apprentices are given intensive help with filling in job application forms and interview techniques as part of the training. They are then encouraged and supported towards the end of their apprenticeship to search for jobs and apply for suitable vacancies both in the Council and externally.

Is there a salary?

Apprentices receive an allowance of £96.20 per week. This is paid monthly.

When to Apply

Apprentices / trainees are recruited mainly in the Autumn, usually September / October,  with a smaller 'top up' in the Spring.  These are advertised in The Citizen| and on the Jobsgopublic website|.  If you are interested in receiving an application pack, forward your contact details to be kept on a database, and you will be sent a pack automatically when recruitment is taking place.

The City Council also runs 'positive action' trainee placements targeting minority ethnic, disabled, women returners and other under represented members of the community.  These placements are subject to funding being available for specific projects.
