No matter how big, or how small, litter is litter. It will now be even more costly to drop it.

£1 Million is Spent on Keeping the City Clean

The City Council spends £1 million a year on keeping Gloucester clean - and it is YOU the people of Gloucester who pick up the bill for our cleaning efforts. We spend a substantial proportion of our total budget keeping the city clean. It is a big drain on the council tax and we want to encourage people to use litter bins - or take their rubbish home with them. We are stepping up our enforcement and have recently had a number of successful litter prosecutions.

Use Litter Bins - or Take Your Rubbish Home

Every Year £1 Million is Spent on:

  • mechanical street cleaning
  • sweeping
  • litter picking
  • clearing dumping / fly tipping
  • clearing drug related materials like needles
  • steam cleaning chewing gum and other waste
  • emptying litter bins
  • emptying dog bins
  • cleaning graffiti

Extra Effort

On top of the cleaning activities highlighted above, Gloucester City Council has carried out a number of campaigns aimed at improving the cleanliness of the city, and raising awareness of the huge amount of effort and cost of keeping the city clean:

For the past 2 years, the city council has organised a 'Clean up Gloucester' day, where local residents, businesses and organisations and the City Council all come together to take pride in our city and our local communities. Click here for details of the Clean Up Gloucester Day 2005.

Roadside Clear-ups - we have had to close whole stretches of major roads in the city so that we can clear up the rubbish which has been thrown from cars by irresponsible motorists. Click here for more details of the latest roadside clear-up.

The A38 Clean-up

The second major clean up in a month of a roadside in the city took place on the 20 February. One lane in each direction of the A38 between the Waterwells Roundabout and Cole Avenue Junction was closed from 9.30am so the clean up can take place. In a similar clear up earlier this month nearly four lorry loads of rubbish were collected from the A40.

The city council has blamed irresponsible motorists for the mess which will cost Gloucester taxpayers thousands of pounds to clear up. And the council has warned anyone caught discarding rubbish from their vehicles will face a £75 fine. Businesses are also being warned they could face legal action if the mess is being caused by litter coming from unsecured loads on commercial vehicles.
