TOP TOURISM STAFF TAKE SILVER

Gloucester staff struck silver in awards to find the top Tourist Information Centre in the south-west.

Shortlisted from a field of 200 entries, in a judging process featuring secret shopping visits and enquiries by telephone and email as well as in person, the city’s Tourist Information Centre was runner up in the competition run by South West Tourism.

The TIC in Southgate Street, which is currently closed for two weeks to undergo refurbishment, was also named as one of the top 40 contributors to the tourism experience in the south west of England.

City council leader Paul James said: “The award is a fantastic and well-deserved recognition of the great work the Tourist Information Centre does for residents and visitors to put the city on the map.

“The TIC not only helps visitors but provides a valuable service to local people to book accommodation and travel. Once the improvements to the offices are completed, the service will be even better.”

Work to improve the display areas for books, maps and gifts will be completed by December 1st, when staff relocate from their temporary base at the Guildhall in Eastgate Street and the TIC reopens.

TOURISM GOES FROM GOOD TO GREAT

The Tourist Information Centre in Gloucester City Centre is to close for a fortnight – so that it can make the service it provides even better.

Its Southgate Street office will be closed this Saturday (November 15th) and staff will move to temporary offices at The Guildhall in Eastgate Street from Monday (November 17th) while improvement works are carried out.

The works will provide better display areas for visitors to see the range of books, maps, information and gifts that are available.

Council Leader, Paul James, commented: “The tourism office is used not just by visitors but by many local residents as well. You can book travel arrangements and accommodation around the country

“ Our tourism team have recently won an award for their exceptional customer services. These improvements to their offices will enable them to go from providing a good to a great service.”

The office will reopen for business on Monday December 1st.

Yo, Ho, Ho – It’s Pirate Weekend in Gloucester

Gloucester will be alive with cries of “Shiver Me Timbers” as the city plays host to a weekend of pirate action.

On the weekend of October 25th and 26th, Viking long boats will do battle in the docks, a pirate-styled tall ship, The Matthew, will sail in and pirate crews will do mock-battle with pistol and cutlass.

Other highlights include shanty bands, historical re-enactments, treasure hunts and, on the family Sunday, pirate workshops for children.

The pirate weekend carries on the theme of exciting maritime events started last year with the hugely successful Tall Ships weekend, and celebrates Gloucester’s position as Britain’s most inland port.

Leader of the council Paul James said: “This is a fantastic event for everyone to enjoy, celebrating our historic maritime connections as well as highlight all the new places unfolding thanks to Gloucester’s continued regeneration, truly putting our “buried treasure” on the map.”

Various events take place in The Docks and The Mall Eastgate Street on both Saturday and Sunday.
