Work is steaming ahead on keeping the city clean.
In the 'People's Budget' residents were invited to decide how they would like to spend £50,000. Cleaning the city centre was the runaway winner with nearly 40% of the vote.
Now extra steam cleaning three nights a week is just one of the additional activities taking place around the city centre. The late night operation between 10pm and 6am – done to ensure that it doesn't cause disruption to local traders during the day – sees council staff cleaning litter bins, street furniture, chewing gum and seagull mess.
'Night Owl'
It follows on from another innovation - the 'Night Owl' patrols – where staff are out overnight at weekends cleaning up after the pubs, clubs and takeaways close to ensure the streets are 'spic and span' for the following morning's trade.
And council workers have been armed with a new 'gum busting' machine – designed to help 'dissolve away' hard to move chewing gum.

City and Community Rangers have been kitted out with distinctive new orange and blue uniforms – to give them a higher profile and make it easier for them to be seen.
hard hitting
A hard hitting poster campaign has also been run aimed at getting across the message that the city spends £1million a year clearing up mess from local streets.
The Peoples' Budget is in addition to the regular work carried on all year round by the council to keep Gloucester clean and tidy.
Philip Staddon, Executive Manager for Care and Maintenance of the City, commented: "Looking after the City's environment is a top priority for councillors. We have introduced a wide range of new ideas as a direct response to public demand. All of these contribute to making Gloucester cleaner and safer and a place we can all be proud of."
