Nearing completion - Kings Square beginning to take shape

Kings Square is now poised to play its part in hosting a string of events for the City’s summer festival.
The £250,000 'interim' scheme has been completed and sees the city's central square turned into a feature that can host everything from markets to concerts.

As the first edition of City Life was going to press a 'county' market with around 40 stalls had already been held as the launch event. It has taken 12 weeks and 2,000 tonnes of crushed stone to fill the old fountain area of the square.
While the tarmac surface is useable a final attractive bound gravel surface is due to be laid in mid July to complete the current operation.

The work has been complemented by the £200,000 repaving of the Oxbode - one of the 'gateways' into the square.
The City Council will now be working with the Heritage Urban Regeneration Company - it's partner in the development of future plans for the city – on a long-term scheme for the square.

This will see the whole of the area including the bus station turned into a 'retail quarter'. Comments made by local residents during a consultation exercise in Kings Walk earlier this year about future plans for the square will be fed into the process for any final designs. For details about events in the square during the summer see page 4, for further information about the square visit www.gloucester.gov.uk/kingssquare|.
