Have your say on an undiscovered jewel in Westgate Street

Have your say on one of the city’s oldest buildings, the Fleece Hotel site, Westgate Street Gloucester. That’s the latest message from Gloucester City Council.
Over the next four weeks, Wednesday 16th November and Wednesday 14th December 2011, city residents have their chance to comment on the Concept Statement produced for the Fleece Hotel site.
The Concept Statement sets out the historic value of the site as well as proposed uses for the future, whilst taking into consideration how any changes to the buildings will relate to their surroundings.
The objective is to ensure the building’s repair, restoration and active reuse to create a vibrant urban space in the heart of the city. The site will become a key link between the Cathedral and the Docks.
Paul James, leader of Gloucester City Council and cabinet member for regeneration said: “The Fleece complex is an under-utilised, run down, centrally located historic site with a combination of valued listed buildings and more modern buildings all in poor condition.
“The site offers huge potential to be sensitively redeveloped, whilst retaining its important historic value. It will ultimately form a key site within the city’s urban fabric and contribute towards the city’s ongoing regeneration programme.
“The overall aim for this site is to create a new destination within the city centre and for it to function as the creative and cultural quarter of Gloucester. “
Documents can be downloaded and comments submitted online at www.gloucester.gov.uk/cityplan. In addition hard copies are available at the Gloucester City Council offices in the Docks, the Tourist Information Centre, local libraries and the Guildhall.
