To support international women’s day, 8th March, Gloucester City Council is offering six women, in the city, the opportunity to get to know what it is like to be a councillor.
In Gloucester city only 28 per cent of councillors are female, despite the fact that they make up around 51 per cent of the population.
It is hoped the new Councillor Shadowing Scheme will improve the representation of women within the local democratic system by encouraging those who take part to put
themselves forward for elected office. The launch of the scheme coincides with International Women’s Day, 8th March.
Councillor Kathy Williams, cabinet member for communities and neighbourhoods, said “To be fully representative the number of women on the council needs to increase. We are hoping by giving women the chance to shadow a councillor we may encourage them to do this.
“The women taking part will get to attend council meetings, training sessions and surgeries to gain a better understanding of the political process. To gain essential skills and knowledge enabling them to become more active in their community. “
Applicants must be 17 years or older, want to make a difference in the city and their local community, and be able to commit to a minimum of fifteen hours over four months (May-August) to complete the programme. The closing date is 31st March 2010.
Those interested in taking part should visit www.gloucester.gov.uk or call 01452 396396.
The project is supported by the South West Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership. The cost of expenses relating to dependant care/travel can be covered.
