Gloucester Park is set to host the city’s Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile on Sunday 21st March, and needs local people to show their support by entering at www.sportrelief.com.

No matter your age or fitness level, you can walk, jog, sprint or skip one, three or six miles on a route through the city.

The one mile event, organised by Gloucester City Council and Marketing Gloucester Ltd, sets off at 10.30am, with longer three and six-mile events leaving the park slightly earlier, at 10am.

Many people will walk one mile without thinking about it. At an average pace, it will take around half an hour. Spectators are welcome to cheer on friends across the route.

To avoid any delays in the race starting go online and register at www.sportrelief.com, although there will be facilities to register on the day for those who cannot pre-register.

Councillor Martyn White, Cabinet member for heritage and leisure said; “It’s great that the city council is staging an event for sports relief. Not only is it raising money for a worthwhile cause, but it also encourages local people to get out-and-about in the fresh air helping them to stay fit and healthy.

“Events such as these really do bring people together helping to make a city with strong and cohesive communities.”

Comic Relief will spend the money raised through sponsorship helping poor and vulnerable people both here in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries.

The following road closures will be in place for the event between 10 am and 12:30 pm on Sunday 21st March 2010.

Park Road, Brunswick Rd, Parliament St, Southgate St ( from junction with Longsmith Street to junction with Parliament Street), Archdeacon Street, Lower Westgate Street, The Quay to Severn Road, Severn Road, Llanthony Road, Spa Road and Montpellier.
Ends

Sport Relief has a unique history of dedicated people doing extraordinary things to rise to the challenge. In 2006 David Walliams completed his astonishing swim across the English Channel and in 2008 Adrian Chiles and Alan Shearer cycled 335 miles from Newcastle to London. This summer Eddie Izzard set an incredible standard by running an amazing 43 marathons in 51 days around the UK and there’ll be even more amazing celebrity challenges to get the whole nation geared up for the Sport Relief Weekend.
