Election Count - on the night

Posted on Wednesday 10th March 2010
Votes for the general election in Gloucester City will be counted ‘on the night’.

The announcement has come from City Council Chief Executive Julian Wain, who is the Acting Returning Officer for the Gloucester Parliamentary constituency.

He said: “ Whenever the general election is called we will count the votes at the close of poll on the night.

“ If the Parliamentary election is combined with the local elections on May 6th then we will count the Parliamentary votes immediately after the close of the polls – and then count the local council votes on the afternoon of Friday May 7th.”

He added: “ There have been considerable changes to the election process since the last general election in 2005. The system is now a good deal more complex – particularly with the new postal voting process.

“ Despite these significant changes we have put plans in place to ensure that the Parliamentary count can be carried out at the close of the poll. However, I must advise that the process could take longer than in previous years and I would ask everyone involved to bear with us and be patient.”

There is still time for local residents to register to vote at both the local and general elections. The deadline is April 20. Applications for postal votes must be returned by 5pm on April 20, 2010.

Voters are urged to return their postal votes as quickly as possible to ensure their vote is counted.

Further information is available from the Elections Office at the City Council on 01452 396203/4 or email elections@gloucester.gov.uk
