A REES-CYCLING SUCCESS
The council's closed lid bin policy did not go down well with a local family of NINE. The policy meant only one bin per household is collected. No side waste is allowed and if the bin lid is not fully closed it will not be emptied. The Rees family saw red with the new rules as they regularly disposed of more rubbish than two wheelie bins could hold. But recycling expert Cat Phelps was on hand to help allay their fears - and now the greenconscious family fill less than one bin load. Most of their recyclables go into green boxes and they take cardboard and plastic bottles to banks at the supermarket. Julie commented: "If a family of nine can get all their rubbish into just the one bin then surely anyone can. Now we just do it - recycling has become the norm." Cat said: "We need people to think differently about household waste and this is exactly what the Rees family did. They are a great example of what can be achieved if you look at your waste as a potential resource and not just rubbish." For more information on recycling log on to www.gloucester.gov.uk/recycling

BARNWOOD STILL ONE OF THE BEST
Barnwood Aboretum has again been named as one of the best parks in the country. For the second year running the aboretum has been awarded the Green Flag - the national benchmark for quality parks and green spaces. The scheme is managed by the Civic Trust and more than 400 parks and open spaces across England and Wales have been granted Green Flag status this year. The status requires sites to be welcoming, safe and well maintained as well as having strong involvement of the local community. The area is a designated nature reserve and contains a mixture of mature native and ornamental trees. It also boasts a 'Friends' group made up of residents supported by the City Council's Parks staff. More information about the arboretum is available by clicking here
