We are open!

On a gloriously sunny day on Sunday 13th July, the new Market and Car Boot site finally opened.

Record attendances meant that over flow car parks were used, and in total about 3,000 people visit the market that day.

All of the 199 pitches were occupied, and part of the main car park had to be used for car boot pitches such was the demand.

Everyone had a great day and many people said how happy they were that Gloucester had it's market and car boot up and running again, in line with the City's great markets tradition.

Where is the site?

The new site is off the new length of by pass at Hempsted. It's about a mile and a half to the South of the City Centre.  To have a look at an aerial view of the site, please click on this link.

The site itself does not have a post code, however, the nearest available code is GL2 5BT.

To help you find your way, please click on the link here, to be directed to a map of the area.

What is on site?

199 market and car boot pitches with around 400 parking spaces, and additional informal parking during the dry summer months. This will operate on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. There will be a bus service to the site, together with cycle and pedestrian links. The site is also fully available to the disabled. Ample secure cycle and motor-cycle parking will be provided on site as well. The plan below shows the market layout.

What's next?

The opening is an exciting milestone and we believe that this market has the potential to become the biggest and best in the region. It is a purpose built site, and we believe this will be a market of which the Citizens of Gloucester can be proud.

In addition, Gloucester Rowing Club will be re-locating to land adjoining the site fronting the canal, and the planning permission allows for occasional camping and caravanning largely in connection with Rowing Club events.

Agreement has been reached with the Rowing Club, and Lawyers have now been instructed to get on with selling the agreed site to the Club. The site will be between the second market car park and the canal itself. We will shortly post a plan on the web page showing the Rowing Club site.

On the West side of the by pass another part of a family day out has opened.  The Gloucestershire Barn Owl Centre has moved from it's previous home in Brockworth, and is open to the public.  You can look at it's website by clicking here.

So, the people of Gloucester finally have a permanent site from which the City can continue its great tradition of market trading. This has been eagerly awaited by the public, and the current traders, and previous traders who left the City when the market stopped at the former Cattle Market have returned.

The Open Market, Car Boot and the Barn Owl Centre will make a great day out for all the family.

How do I get a pitch?

In the first instance you would need to contact the Senior Market Officer either by telephone, email or letter (see information below) and tell him of your interest and what you would be selling.  He would then supply you with all the relevant details regarding pitch size, costs and setting up your market stall.  If you were still interested you would be sent an application form and  asked to complete and return this.

You can also leave your details by clicking here and completing the registration form.
