Heritage Open Days11th - 14th September 2008

Heritage Open Days is Europe's largest free festival of history, architecture and culture.

In Gloucester in 2008 we are looking forward to hosting our largest ever Heritage Open Days.  The event is one of the biggest and best line ups in England.  This will include a number of new venues, lectures and a programme of music and entertainment to bring venues to life.

Historic venues
Bearland House
Longsmith Street
Bearland House is an impressive 18th Century building with an ornamental facade, forecourt, fine wrought iron railings and gates. The interior boasts a carved wooden staircase and decorated ceilings. It was purchased by a high county Sheriff in 1764 and the ghost of his daughter is said to appear at the staircase window.

Blackfriars Priory
Ladybellegate Street
The most complete Dominican Priory in Great Britain.  Most of the 13th Century church remains, including a scissor-braced roof.  Owned and managed by English Heritage.

Bookends
26 Westgate Street
Britains finest example of a timber framed town house built in 1542.  It was once the Hall of the Grocers Guild, The Mansion House of a Mayor of Gloucester and in the 19th Century a lodging for Assize Judges.

Constitution House
Constitution Walk, Off Brunswick Road
A fine grade 2 listed Georgian building built in 1750 by Robert Chandler. Since 1883 it has been owned by the Gloucester Conservative Beneficial Society and they will be celebrating the last 125 years at the Open Weekend with a Barbeque/Hog roast from 15-00 to 18-00 on Saturday. The bar/restaurant will also be open to the general public all day.

Masonic Hall (Mercer's Hall)
Cross Keys Lane
Built in 1778 as a bonded warehouse for wines and spirits, this is an impressive grade II listed building.  Another hidden gem in the city centre, not normally open for public viewing.

Old Bishop's Palace

Victorian bishop's palace on the site of the Medieval abbot's lodging - now used by The King's School.  Short guided tours available.

Parliament Rooms

Three historic rooms in Church House, Gloucester which was the old Deanery for Gloucester Cathedral.  One room was used to hold Parliament in 1378.

Roman Wall in Gloucester Furniture Exhibition Centre

A historic Roman wall inside the store is on public view.  The lower level of the wall is a Roman colonia dating back to 97AD.  At street level it is a medieval building.

A Grade II* Building and also a scheduled ancient monument, St Michael's Tower dates back to 1465.  The building contains many original features; a fine vaulted ceiling; a beautiful stained glass window and more!

Architectural delight.  16th century elaborate timber paneled room, a hidden gem in the centre of the city.  Not usually open for public viewing.
Undercroft at the Fleece Hotel

12th century tunnel vaulted undercroft.  The best example in Europe of a rich merchant's warehouse, known locally as 'The Monks Retreat'.  Guided Tours throughout the day.

The Whispering Gallery at Gloucester Cathedral
The Whispering Gallery was created when a passageway was built behind the Great East Window of the Cathedral in the 14th Century.  Entry to the Gallery includes the opportunity to see this wonderful window "up close" and to see an exhibition on its origins and meanings.

Beatrix Potter Shop and Museum

In 1903, Beatrix Potter published one of her most loved tales, The Tailor of Gloucester, which was inspired by a visit she made to the city. It was an instant hit and is still popular with adults and children. Come and see the buildings she based her story on and meet the Tailor, Simpkin the cat and a host of helpful mice.

Gloucester Folk Museum

Fine Tudor and Jacobean building, grade II* listed housing the first provincial folk museum.  Protestant martyr, Bishop Hooper, said to have lodged here in the 16th century.  Local history, crafts, trades and industries from 1500 to present.  Regular special exhibitions, activities and events, children's activities, puppet theatre and hands on games and toys.

Gloucester Guildhall

Victorian Guildhall, formally occupied by the the City Council Offices.  Prior to the construction of the Guildhall the site has been occupied by the Blue Coat School founded by Sir Thomas Rich.  Today the Guildhall is home to a cinema, dance floor, exhibition and activity area and cafe.

Gloucester Rugby - Kingsholm Stadium

Established in 1873, Gloucester Rugby is one of the world's oldest rugby clubs and has a long and very proud history.  Every corner of the famous Kingsholm Stadium has a story to tell.  The open day will enable people to have a guided tour of the stadium and gain insight into the pride, honour and passion associated with this historic club.

Nature in Art is a museum dedicated to all kinds of art inspired by nature.  Wallsworth Hall is a fine Georgian mansion house from the mid 1700's.

New Olympus Theatre

The Theatre, rich with history has undergone many changes. Starting off as a 700 seater Picturedrome in the early 1920's, later being transformed into a Bingo Hall and then in the 80's into a theatre. Recently having been acquired it has been renovated to a functioning standard.  The Theatre will be open for a talk on the history of the theatre and a tour of the building.  The 30 minute talk and tour will be followed by a variety performance at 14:00 and 16:30. Complimentary refreshments will be available.

North Warehouse

North Warehouse is in the heart of the Gloucester Historic Docks.  You can still see the old workings of the warehouse and see the Civic Regalia on display in the Civic Suite.  There will be the opportunity for families to have their photo taken in the Mayor's Chair with Robes.

Over Canal Basin

Built in 1822 as the 'Spa Church' by private subscription.  Taken over by the Diocese of Gloucester in 1850's.  Features include vaulted ceiling, Art Nouveau decorated apse and semi-dome.  There is also a Nicholson organ dating back to 1866.  The west front was rebuilt in Italian Romanesque style in 1900.

Mariners Church

The Mariners Chapel opened in 1849 and became popular with the townspeople. The chaplain was responsible for visiting every ship that arrived. Today the church, which features fine stained glass windows, is open everyday for visitors.

St Mary de Crypt Church

Fine 15th century church associated with famous preachers George Whitefield and John Biddle, founder of English Unitarianism.  Contains monuments to Sir Thomas Bell and his wife Joan.  Robert Raikes, founder of the Sunday School movement, and the famous banker Jemmy wood are buried here.

The City's oldest parish church was built in the 12th Century over a Saxon Church and a Roman Building.  The Roman mosaic tiled floor can still be seen in the Church.  The building was used as a prison for Royalist Soldiers during the Civil War.

St Peter's Catholic Church
London Road
Land acquired in 1790 with small church on site.  Current building was erected in 1859 and was designed by Gilbert Blount in the Gothic style.  The church was consecrated on the 8th October 1868.  Lady Chapel with exquisitely carved Triptych.  In the sanctuary are the carved figures of our Lady, St Joseph, St. Gregory, St. Augustine, St. David and St. Willstan.  The Church has recently been restored to it's Victorian splendour.  The organ is of great historical interest, erected in 1937 by John Compien and possesses a 32 foot stop of actual pitch.
