16th October 2008 - BRACE YOURSELF FOR A VIKING INVASION

Norse marauders will be taking on Saxon sailors, as Viking pirates stage their first maritime battle since the great age of pillaging for Gloucester’s Pirates! Weekend.

The battles, involving a 50ft Viking longship in full sail, a similar sized Saxon ship and a Saxon rowing boat, will take place on the afternoons of Saturday October 26th and Sunday October 26th in Gloucester Docks.

Re-enactors from Viking group Regia Anglorum will engage in daring manoeuvres, hand-to-hand combat, rescues with ropes and at least one splashing for Vikings and Saxons alike.

Kim Siddorn, the organiser from Regia Anglorum, said: “It’s the first time we’ve staged a battle like this and it’s very exciting. We’ll be firing javelins and arrows at one another and trying to capture one another’s ship. I expect that someone will end up falling in the water too.

“And the whole episode will be fully narrated and commentated on, so that everyone there will know exactly what is happening and feel fully involved.”

Leader of the council Paul James commented: “It’s great that some of the earliest pirates, represented by the Vikings of Regia Anglorum, have chosen to stage their first great battle in the waterways of Gloucester. While it may have taken more than a millennium, they are certainly putting Gloucester on the Viking map.”

Other highlights include tall ship The Matthew sailing into the Docks complete with pirate styling, shanty bands, pirate battles and re-enactments, treasure hunts and pirate workshops for children.

25th September 2008 - Yo, Ho, Ho – It’s Pirate Weekend in Gloucester

Gloucester will be alive with cries of “Shiver Me Timbers” as the city plays host to a weekend of pirate action.

On the weekend of October 25th and 26th, Viking long boats will do battle in the docks, a pirate-styled tall ship, The Matthew, will sail in and pirate crews will do mock-battle with pistol and cutlass.

Other highlights include shanty bands, historical re-enactments, treasure hunts and, on the family Sunday, pirate workshops for children.

The pirate weekend carries on the theme of exciting maritime events started last year with the hugely successful Tall Ships weekend, and celebrates Gloucester’s position as Britain’s most inland port.

Leader of the council Paul James said: “This is a fantastic event for everyone to enjoy, celebrating our historic maritime connections as well as highlight all the new places unfolding thanks to Gloucester’s continued regeneration, truly putting our “buried treasure” on the map.”

Various events take place in The Docks and The Mall Eastgate Street on both Saturday and Sunday.
