Business rates boost for small businesses

Small and independent retailers could pay lower business rates if a discount scheme is given the green light by Gloucester City Council.

The move which Councillors are due to consider in February’s cabinet meeting could see businesses with a rateable value of less than £51,000, see their rates reduced by a third.

If given the go-ahead the proposal is set to benefit around 290 retailers, which could include independent shops, charity shops, restaurants and cafes.

The plan recognises that small to medium shops face a growing challenge on the high street as more shoppers go online.

The national scheme will be fully funded by a government grant.

However, as set out in government guidelines, businesses such as banks, payday lenders, betting shops, estate agents or those providing medical or professional services like solicitors, will not qualify.

Councillor Hannah Norman, Cabinet Member for Performance and Resources, said: “Our high street is extremely important to Gloucester and is at the heart of our city. We welcome this central government incentive to support small businesses.”
