Councillor Steve Morgan who currently holds the cabinet position has announced he will stand down later this month.

Councillor Andy Lewis who represents Quedgeley Severn Vale and has previously been a cabinet member has been selected to take up the post.

Councillor Morgan said: “I’ve enjoyed my time as cabinet member enormously and in particular would like the thank the officers who have supported me and who are completely dedicated to this city. While the pandemic has meant the culture and leisure sector have faced unprecedented challenges we have worked hard to adapt and to make sure that Gloucester still has a thriving culture and leisure offer.”

Councillor Lewis who has been a city councillor for 19 years will begin his new role following the next full council meeting on November 18.

He said: “I look forward to taking over from Councillor Morgan who I know will be working closely with me to make sure there is a seamless transition. I am looking forward to carrying on the good work and playing my part in helping to make Gloucester a great place for both residents and visitors alike.”

Councillor Richard Cook, leader of Gloucester City Council, added: “I’d like to thank Councillor Morgan for his dedication particularly as COVID has added an extraordinary level of difficulty to the culture portfolio with the lockdowns causing cancellations and postponements of cultural events. I know Councillor Lewis who is a very experienced councillor will be just as committed to the role.”
