New measures introduced to tackle anti-social behaviour

They have been introduced to prevent access to alleyways in Barton and Tredworth following complaints of anti-social and nuisance behaviour.

The alleyways to be closed off are:

• Between Victory Road and Moreton Street
• Between Moreton Street and Melbourne Street West
• Between Salisbury Road and Hatfield Road

The city council’s legal team has drawn up the PSPOs following consultation with the police and local residents.

Gates will be installed in the next few weeks to prevent the general public from accessing the alleyways, but local residents who need to use them to access their homes will be able to do so.

PSPOs can be brought in to restrict certain behaviour in a public space. They can be in place for up to three years and breaching a PSPO is a criminal offence that can lead to a Fixed Penalty Notice or prosecution. These specific PSPOs which restrict access to areas were previously known as Gating Orders.

Cllr Jennie Watkins, cabinet member for communities and neighbourhoods at Gloucester City Council, said: “We will not tolerate persistent anti-social behaviour which has a negative effect in the community. I hope that these orders will make a positive difference to residents’ lives.”
