Gloucester City Council is offering free parking to support local retailers as part of Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday is a nationwide event, which takes place this year on Saturday, December 1.

It aims to encourage shoppers to support local and independent retailers in the run up to Christmas and Gloucester City Council is getting behind the campaign by offering free parking throughout the day.

It will be free in the Council’s car parks on Westgate Street, Station Road and Hare Lane North.

Last year, Small Business Saturday saw an estimated £748 million spent with businesses across the UK, while digitally the #SmallBizSatUK campaign hashtag trended at number one in the UK on Twitter, reaching over 115 million people globally.

Councillor Paul James, Leader of Gloucester City Council, said: “Small businesses are a crucial part of our local economy and provide the majority of jobs in the city.  It is vital that we support them with our custom, not just as we approach the key Christmas trading season but all year round.  Small Business Saturday is a great way to highlight the role that our small businesses play and the tremendous range of goods and services they offer.”

Emily Knight, Business Engagement – Marketing Gloucester, said: “Small Business Saturday is a national day to celebrate businesses that make up an important component of the UK. Small businesses need recognition throughout the year, this year Marketing Gloucester, Gloucester City Council and Gloucester BID have worked together to highlight the wonderful range of small businesses in Gloucester through the GL Card. Small Business Saturday is another excellent scheme that can further heighten consumer awareness of the variety of local businesses within the city.”
