Gloucester Bus Station nominated for national transport award

Gloucester City Council’s Transport Hub project has been shortlisted for a national award.

The city council is a finalist in the category of 'Construction and Engineering Project of the Year' working alongside Stagecoach, as the delivery partners for the Gloucester Transport Hub. The partners have worked together to bring a new and modern £7.5 million bus station to Gloucester city centre.

The winner will be announced on 31 October at the awards ceremony in London. The Transport Hub project is one of eight finalists. Other finalists in this category include Highways England, Transport for Greater Manchester, Network Rail and many more.

The glass fronted bus station was funded by Central Government, through the GFirst LEP, and the City Council. It has space for 12 bus bays, a café, shop, toilets and seating areas and features digital screens with real time information for passengers. It is also equipped with solar panels to power internal lighting and has been designed to be fully accessible for people with disabilities.

Cllr Paul James, leader of Gloucester City Council, said: “We are extremely proud of our new bus station and I’d like to congratulate everyone who has worked so hard on this project. The Transport Hub is a real asset for Gloucester, making connectivity within the city much easier and more accessible for everyone and providing a much better environment for passengers.”

Rupert Cox, Managing Director for Stagecoach West, said: “The transport hub in Gloucester is not only an architectural win but has won over our customers who now benefit from real time arrival and departure information, an integrated customer travel information desk and comfortable indoor waiting area with plentiful seating. Safety is important to us and the transport hub provides enhanced safety features including safeguarding customers ahead of departure - with the transport hub doors only opening when a bus is parked - and improved CCTV surveillance for ongoing customer safety.”
