Scheme 13: Benhall Meadow

Habitat Creation

Located within Cheltenham

The open space consists of amenity grassland (which is regularly mown, reducing species diversity) and semi-natural broad-leaved woodland following the course of a small stream, the Hatherley Brook.

Proposals include creating a buffer between the woodland and the grassland consisting of meadow planting. A gradual change in vegetation height between mown grassland and woodland would create important variations in habitat structure vital for increasing invertebrate species diversity. This would also open up more of the grassland to foraging for bats and birds.
