Report fly-tipping

Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste.

It has a negative impact on our streets, costs tax payers and the council thousands of pounds each year. With your help the crime can be investigated.

Use this service:

  • if you see fly-tipped waste
  • if you see someone fly-tipping or have evidence of who did it

What you need to know

If the fly-tipping is on public land we aim to clear the waste within 2 working days. If the material is dangerous for example, dumped chemicals, oil drums, asbestos or animal carcasses we’ll remove it as quickly as we can.

If the waste is on private land, it is the responsibility of the landowner, you will need to ask them to remove it.

Report fly-tipping

If there is an immediate and serious threat to safety phone us on 01452 396 396

What happens after you report someone?

We'll look at the information you give to see if the case is appropriate for investigation by our environmental crime team.

We'll only take action if we have enough evidence of the person committing the offence. Action can include fines or conviction.

People who fly-tip can get:

  • a fine of up to £50,000
  • up to five year’s imprisonment

Fly-tipping on your land

If you find waste dumped illegally on your land or water for example in a stream, pond or ditch you must:

  • arrange to remove the fly-tipped waste safely
  • pay for the removal and disposal

You can still report the incident to us for investigation if you witnessed the crime or have evidence of who did it, but we are under no obligation to remove the waste.

You can take the waste to Hempsted Recycling Centre or employ a registered waste contractor to remove the waste.

Check the Environmental agency's register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers to see if the contractor is a registered waste carrier.
