Temporary Closure of Hempsted Recycling Centre

Hempsted household recycling centre will be getting a modern ‘squashing’ machine to offer Gloucester residents the same efficient services as Pyke Quarry near Stroud.

When will Hempsted HRC be closed?

The Hempsted HRC will close from Monday 3 to Friday 21 December inclusive to install new equipment and improve the site.

When will Hempsted HRC reopen?

Hempsted HRC will re-open on Saturday 22 December.

Why is the HRC closed?

Some of the machines on site need to be upgraded. The current system for compacting materials in skips is now quite old and becoming very unreliable so maintenance is costly. The new equipment will enable some waste and recycling to be compacted more efficiently resulting in fewer journeys by road.
Unreliable machinery on site has also resulted in emergency closures to the recycling centre and visitors being turned away. In order to prevent last minute closures and wasted journeys, and to make the sites more flexible to operate into the future, Gloucestershire County Council is bringing in a new mobile compactor.
During the closure staff will have a chance to familiarise themselves with the new mobile waste compaction machine. New and improved signs will be installed so visitors know which materials go where.
During this time residents are asked to take their bulky household waste and recycling to their closest alternative centre:

  • Pyke Quarry HRC near Stroud (Closed on Wednesdays)
  • Oak Quarry HRC near Coleford (Closed on Tuesdays)
  • Wingmoor Farm HRC in Stoke Orchard (Closed on Wednesdays)However residents may prefer to plan their visit before or after the closure dates to avoid potential queues at other sites.
