Fresh new look for Gloucester Guildhall

Published
To keep the city’s culture thriving, Gloucester’s Guildhall has been renovated and will reopen to the public tomorrow (Saturday, October 1).

The venue will reopen with a hip hop music event called Open Art Surgery, a hip-hop dance and music show by Your Next Move and Breakin’ Convention.

Sunday, October 2 will see the venue host hard rock band, Inglorious.

The Guildhall’s refurbished cinema will reopen on Wednesday, October 5.

Gloucester Guildhall offers a variety of live entertainment such as music, comedy, theatre, dance, and contemporary film as well as participatory workshops and art exhibitions, and sees over 50,000 people passing through the doors annually.

The grade II listed arts venue was awarded £230,702 by the Arts Council, which allowed for a revamp to help the Guildhall enhance its live and digital performances.

The venue closed back in July for renovation works including creating a new dance rehearsal space with a sprung floor.

Super-fast broadband has been installed throughout including all meeting and conference spaces while the building’s mosaic hallway has also been exposed back to its former glory.

Improvements to the lighting and audio equipment will continue over the next month.

The bar and kitchen refurbishments are still currently under construction, so the team is using the front café bar until the works are complete.

Philip Walker, Head of Culture at Gloucester City Council, said: “We’re delighted that with significant investment from the Arts Council we’re able to bring the Guildhall up to date and so it becomes a venue of choice for artists and performers from across the UK. The improvements to the sound quality, lighting, projections, WiFi and dance-floors will ensure we can continue to attract high-quality live acts to Gloucester and provide an even better offer for local audiences. Our hospitality spaces will be able to welcome more businesses and we can provide facilities for all-kinds of different occasions and uses. Get in touch with the team if you wish to hire our spaces and support the Guildhall by attending the exciting events coming up.”
