Have your say on Gloucester’s future to help protect its past
Gloucester City Council has launched a consultation on the city centre’s conservation area which aims to safeguard the city’s history and heritage.
Councils are requested to review conservation areas regularly to make sure the boundaries and conditions are working to protect the area.
Gloucester’s city centre conservation area was set up in 2007 and the review is being driven by the Cathedral Quarter High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ).
HSHAZ is a £1.9million heritage-led regeneration scheme to preserve and repair Westgate street’s historic buildings and celebrate its heritage with cultural events and activities funded by Historic England and Gloucester City Council
The conservation area currently focuses on Gloucester’s centre and includes the Gate Streets, the Greyfriars area, and Kings Square.
It contains some of Gloucester’s most important listed buildings, such as the New Inn and the Fleece, as well as extensive archaeological remains.
Anyone who lives, works or visits the city is encouraged to get involved and to say what they think is special about the city centre, and how they think it should be managed.
Councillor Stephanie Chambers, Cabinet Member for Planning and Housing, said ‘This is a wonderful opportunity for the people of Gloucester to have a say in how we manage Gloucester’s heritage. I would encourage all residents to take a look at this publication as it is full of wonderful facts and history about our amazing historic city and it would be great to hear people’s opinions and comments on this appraisal.”
