City Council celebrate double win at Believe in Gloucester Awards
Gloucester Goes Retro and the Cathedral Quarter project were among the winners at the annual celebration of the city, organised by Gloucester BID.
Event of the Year was presented to Gloucester Goes Retro, with the Heritage/Regeneration award going to the Cathedral Quarter High Street Heritage Action Zone.
The popular Gloucester Goes Retro Festival fills the city streets on the Saturday of the August Bank Holiday. The festival was the vision of Cllr Colin Organ who sadly passed away in 2022, but his legacy continues with the festival picking up the award for the third time.
This year will be the tenth anniversary of Gloucester Goes Retro.
Westgate Street has recently been given a new lease of life through the Cathedral Quarter High Street Heritage Action Zone.
A £1.9 million investment from Historic England, with support from Gloucester City Council, other local funders and property owners, has allowed improvements in the area. Historic buildings have been lovingly restored, empty spaces have been turned into homes and vibrant businesses, with event organised to celebrate the city’s unique history.
Cllr Jeremy Hilton, Leader of Gloucester City Council and Cabinet member responsible for Regeneration, said: “I am delighted that the hard work of the city council has been recognised with these two awards.
“I would like to thank the teams involved in both Gloucester Goes Retro and the Cathedral Quarter project for their hard work.
“These projects are supporting our ambition to create a vibrant and attractive city that celebrates Gloucester’s unique heritage.”
