City Council welcomes retention of Post Office in King’s Square

Gloucester City Council is delighted to welcome the decision that the main Post Office in Kings Square will remain open following a period of uncertainty.

Whilst there will be some changes to the way it is run, the Post Office says it will be managed by an independent retail partner.

Last November, the Post Office announced that more than a hundred larger crown branches – including the one in Kings Square – could close with the possible loss of hundreds of jobs.

Cllr. Rebecca Trimnell, cabinet member for community engagement at Gloucester City Council said, "We’re very pleased with the decision to keep Gloucester’s Post Office where it is in King’s Square. We know our residents rely heavily on these services in this central location and we’re delighted this is set to continue.”

From September 2025, Gloucester Post Office will be operated by an independent franchise retail partner, RF Retail Limited (RF Retail). The transition to RF Retail will provide the same range of services that customers have come to rely on, with the added benefit of extended opening hours on Tuesday mornings.

This change is part of Post Office Limited's commitment to delivering a “New Deal for Postmasters”, moving to a fully franchised network by Autumn 2025.

To keep customers informed, posters will be displayed in the branch, and further updates will be provided in branch to confirm the exact date of the change.
