Council backs small businesses with free parking for shoppers
Small Business Saturday takes place on Saturday, December 6 and is an important date for many small retailers who rely on the festive footfall.
Small Business Saturday is a nationwide event which aims to encourage shoppers to support local and independent retailers in the run-up to Christmas.
Gloucester City Council is getting behind the campaign by offering free parking throughout the day in the council’s car parks on Westgate Street, Station Road and Hare Lane North.
Councillor Declan Wilson, deputy leader of Gloucester City Council and Cabinet Member for Performance and Resources, said: “Small businesses are the backbone of our high street and we’re very lucky in Gloucester to have lots of independent shops and small businesses offering something special and unique. While we know that many people will do some of their shopping online I would urge shoppers to also shop local if they can. Nothing beats local friendly service especially at Christmas and every pound spent keeps our city a thriving and vibrant place to live.”
Claire Knight, Marketing & Business Engagement Lead at Gloucester Business Improvement District (BID) said: “We’re delighted that Gloucester City Council is offering free parking in selected car parks on Small Business Saturday, helping to encourage even more people to visit the city centre and discover the fantastic independent businesses that make Gloucester so unique. From butchers, bakers and restaurants to jewellers, coffee shops, sweet shops and leisure venues, there truly is something for everyone."
"As part of the celebrations, we’ll also be hosting a free Create and Make session at 49 Westgate Street, along with live entertainment and the chance to win a prize on our ‘Shine a Light on Local’ wheel.”
