New team set to target anti-social behaviour on city’s streets

A new team targeting anti-social behaviour in the city centre is launching this month.

The City Centre Engagement Team is an ambitious pilot project aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour issues such as street drinking and intimidation.

The new team being launched by Gloucester City Council will provide a more visual presence and be able to work closer with those involved in street-based nuisance.

The two-year initiative will see two engagement officers offering support including assistance with housing and addiction issues.

The aim of the initiative is to break cycles of behaviour by putting vulnerable people in touch with agencies that help them make long term changes.

The pilot project will work alongside the existing Community Protection Officers, CitySafe and the Solace partnership with Gloucestershire Constabulary, that continues to build strong relationships with the public and local business owners.

The city council has allocated £200,000 over the two-year period to fund the new team which aims to create a safer environment for residents and visitors.

Cllr Rebecca Trimnell, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement at Gloucester City Council, said: “We’ve listened to what residents are telling us. They’re concerned about the anti-social behaviour and the welfare of some of these people who are vulnerable. Through working more closely with those involved in anti-social behaviour we can not only offer them help and support but also address the concerns of local people and businesses.”
