Gloucester wins ninth consecutive Purple Flag award for night time safety

For nine years in a row, Gloucester has secured Purple Flag accreditation. The prestigious award is given to night-time destinations around the world for providing vibrant, dynamic and safe entertainment, dining and culture. It follows transformative developments to the city centre, including a new student campus and the completion of the Eastgate Street Gate project.

For the ninth consecutive year, Gloucester celebrates winning the coveted Purple Flag award for a great night out.

Purple Flag accreditation is awarded to places across the globe where people can enjoy evening entertainment with confidence, including Gloucester - thanks to a focus on safety and wellbeing from dedicated partners and businesses.

For the city, this includes a new team of engagement officers aiming to tackle anti-social behaviour issues. New gates have also created an overnight traffic-free zone on Eastgate Street, a popular nightlife destination.

The judging panel further highlighted the positive impact of the transformative new city centre student campus in helping to drive economic growth and enhance evening management.

Gloucester’s ongoing commitment to public safety was also recognised through initiatives such as the Night Angels safe haven hub, providing support for people on nights out, and the rollout of Suzy Lamplugh Trust and Welfare and Vulnerability Engagement (WAVE) training.

Together, these efforts have ensured Gloucester continues to offer a welcoming, inclusive and well-managed night-time economy for residents and visitors alike.

Councillor Rebecca Trimnell, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement at Gloucester City Council, said: "It is great news that our city has been awarded for the ninth year the prestigious purple flag award. I truly believe Gloucester offers a night out that is entertaining, diverse, safe and enjoyable, which most importantly is successfully managed by the different venues across this city between 5pm and 5am. Obtaining this flag once again shows the steadfast commitment of all those that work in our evening and night-time economies".

City council officers, Gloucestershire Constabulary, City Safe, Ubico, Gloucester LVA and the Gloucester BID all contributed to Gloucester’s application.
