Gloucester Urban Greening Strategy
The draft Gloucester Urban Greening Strategy (GUGS) has been developed to support the recommendations of both the Gloucester Climate Change Strategy and accompanying Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment, which are underpinned by the Climate Change Committee’s Ten Principles for Good Adaptation.
The aim of the report is to reiterate the risks of global warming and a changing climate on Gloucester and to take an evidence-led approach regarding the role green infrastructure can play in mitigating those risks.
The GUGS is split into to the following five sections, which have been written in a deliberately open and accessible manner to ensure the residents of Gloucester can engage with the report with maximum ease:
- What is urban green infrastructure?
- Why do we need more green infrastructure in our cities?
- The benefits of urban green
- Leadership and partnerships
- Next steps
- GUGS recommendations
The recommendations of the GUGS are split into two parts – a vision statement and a proposed list of projects and actions to be initiated or completed in the year following its approval in June 2025.
The proposed ‘vision’ statement is as follows:
Gloucester will be a greener, healthier and more resilient city, where an expanding green infrastructure network helps reduce the impact of heatwaves and flooding, supports biodiversity, improves air quality, and enhances community wellbeing. We will make space for nature in every neighbourhood and demonstrate how urban development and environmental care can work hand in hand to create a vibrant, sustainable city for future generations.
